Need An Excuse To Drink

Need An Excuse To Drink

by Mr. Moneysaver · Apr 18, 2012

Some would say that the Irish don’t exactly need an excuse to enjoy a tipple – however, now it seems we have not one reason, but two…

For now, a new study is suggesting that drinking wine could actually be good for us; and thanks to the food and drink voucher codes at Moneysaver.ie, it’s cheaper than ever to pick up a bottle or two.

Wait… wine is good for us?

According to a new scientific study, it seems that red wine could be good for anyone who is trying to lose weight. The scientists believe that a compound found in red wine could help to control obesity.

Known as piceatannol, it delays the development of young fat cells and stops them growing into mature fat cells. It can actually block the ability of insulin to activate genes that carry out the further stages of fat cell formation. Indeed this heart-healthy agent could even help to protect the body from neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. The compound is thought to be similar to resveratrol, a supplement sold in the UK to combat disease, and is not only found in grapes – it’s also found in both passion fruit and blueberries.

The research was carried out by Purdue University, in Indiana, USA, and suggests that piceatannol can alter the timing of gene expressions and insulin action. As such, the researchers are now testing the idea using animal model obesity to see if it can offer the same benefits.
