Anyone who thought the retail sector would bounce back in 2012 needs to think again – because it seems certain that it will be another tough year ahead.
According to a report by Verdict Research, consumer spending will only grow by 1.2 per cent in 2012 – that’s the third slowest rate in 40 years. Even though food spending is expected to rise dramatically, consumers are likely to cut back on going out with predictions suggesting that the first three months of the year will be particularly tough following on from an expensive Christmas period.
A Red Flag survey suggests that the sectors most in danger next year will be the leisure, retail, travel, property, construction and manufacturing industries.
It suggests that profit warnings from the leading high street retailers only scratch the surface of the struggles ahead – with small to medium sized businesses finding it hard to keep their businesses running. It is believed that many companies may even become bankrupt during 2012.
If you want to support these industries without breaking the bank, then one solution is to look for the best deals you can – such as capitalising on voucher codes and daily deals. Here we take a look at some key segments and some of the deals that could allow you to spend without breaking the bank:
– Food voucher codes: Spending is expected to rise in 2012 but you should still shop around for bargains. You can save eight per cent on all orders at Chocolate Trading; five per cent on all products at Virginia Hayward; and £5 at Vintage Wine Gifts.
– Travel voucher codes: With money tight, the last thing on your mind might be the sun and sand and the opportunity to get away from it all – however, dreams of that summer holiday may still come true if you take advantage of the offers available. For example, you can currently get a 20 per cent discount at all establishments around the globe at BudgetPlaces.com; and up to 40 per cent off 1,000 rooms at Opodo.
– Leisure – daily deals: There are still opportunities to spoil yourself with days out and other leisure activities if you take advantage of daily deals. Sites such as Groupon, Deal Rush and Living Social have become household names – but one website, D3als.ie, gathers all group buying offers from the leading websites into one place so you don’t have to spend time visiting them all. Currently D3als.ie has some incredible offers available, such as: €9.99 instead of €21.65 for a starter, main course and dessert at a leading Indian restaurant; €89 instead of €178 for an overnight stay for two in a leading hotel; and a one year subscription to guitar tutorials for just €12 from Rock Star Academy.
